Otway Bay outside Punta Arenas, Chile, is home to more than 10,000 Magellanic Penguins.

 Arriving very early at Otway Bay outside Punta Arenas, Chile, before the crowds arrived, we were able to see some of the other inhabitants of this large penguin colony.  Magellanic Penguins, the residents at Otway Bay, are burrowing penguins which nest in the ground.  They follow trails which have been worn over the years in the landscape.  Some of the penguins seemed curious about is.  These are my  Highly social, these penguins were often found in groupings, large and small, huddling together.  Friends enjoying a joke, perhaps?  Or maybe it's time for a lesson?     When you've got an itch... Evidently, the penguins here have to spend a large amount of time grooming, not just to keep their feathers clean and waterproof, but also because of tics.  Two older chicks with a tired parent.  The shoreline was active, both with older juveniles and with adults who were in the midst of their annual moult.  Splashing around was a popular past time.     Though social, most of the time again there was a leader or dominant penguin within the smaller groupings who always took the lead.     Another diversion was playing in, on and around this hollow log.          The Magellanic penguins are also known as Jackass penguins for the braying sound they make when they call like this - it sound remarkably like a donkey in tone and style.   They'd call and call - I'm sure some for food, others perhaps just to declare themselves.
