Elephant Island. Known as the wintering-over destination for the famous Shackleton Expedition.

 Our first destination in Antarctica was Elephant Island, probably most famous as the wintering location for the Shackleton Expedition. Tabular icebergs appeared out of the midst and definitely caught our attention!  The weathering patterns on a berg are often indications of its age.  The darker blue, the older they are.  The soft edges of this one show that it's been drifting for many years.  While you can barely make it out, there are small dark  This huge berg had a tunnel running deep within it!    This shows Valentine Cove, the first landing spot for the Shackleton Expedition when they reached the island.  It was too inhospitable, so they left for another site.   There were flying birds all around us this day, mostly Antarctic Petrels darting around too fast for a good picture.  When I saw these  There were many groupings of  Some of them show quite a bit of flare and personality when jumping.
